MY STORY

I’m a 5th generation (at least!) musician from central Pennsylvania, now based out of Toronto, Canada. I grew up playing folk, country, and gospel music with my family in campgrounds, fields, and sitting in deck chairs outside old campers. Born into a preacher’s family, I learned early to love close country harmony in the southern Baptist congregations in which I frequently found myself as a child. I gained a further education from the eccentric and sometimes wild musicians of the northern Appalachian ridgelines, valleys, and hollers surrounding my home in the Allegheny mountains.

Music for me has always been a way to ground myself in place and point of view, while also a way to come together and explore the big beautiful world outside of that perspective. The music that I love is a deeply social practice, and I seek to share it in that same spirit of generosity that it’s always been shared with me.

Since moving to Toronto in 2019 I’ve been seen pickin all around this town, in jams and street corners, backyards and various holy places, sharing the stage with Maywater, The Steadfast Strangers, Kurt Newman’s New Them of Grass, and many others.

LESSONS

I teach a musical path that is practice-oriented and goal-motivated. This means that I want to know what you want to do – play in a jam, add new dimension to your band, pick up an instrument for the first time – and help and support you in building the steps necessary to achieve that. I tend to focus on technique and core musicianship skills. I believe that when you develop those, everything else becomes unlocked and open to you.

Lessons are $60 CAD ($50 USD) per 50 minute lesson. This 50 minutes is in addition to time spent developing reference materials for you, as needed. Lessons are held over Zoom or locally if in the GTA.

Note that I strongly believe in this music as working class culture. If money is a barrier or you are otherwise a member of a marginalized community, please get in touch!
